Print on demand lets you sell clothing without buying stock. You upload a design, list the product in your store, and the supplier prints and ships each piece after a customer pays. You pay the supplier per order. The trade-off is less control over the blank, the print, and the delivery time, so most of the work below goes into picking the right supplier and testing it before you launch.

We use Tapstitch for the worked numbers because its catalog leans toward heavyweight streetwear blanks. Printful and Printify are the broad-catalog options, and we cover when they suit you better.

Step 1: Pick a niche and one hero product

A new brand sells better with a clear audience and one product it can stand behind than with forty designs on forty blanks. Pick the people you are making clothes for (a music scene, a sport, a city, a job) and the one item they would wear most. For streetwear that is usually a heavyweight tee or a hoodie.

Launch that item in two or three colors. Add more products once you know which designs sell. Fewer products also means fewer samples to pay for and fewer size charts to check.

Step 2: Choose blanks by fabric weight and fit

The blank is the garment before printing, and customers judge your brand by it. Two things matter most: weight and cut.

What gsm means

gsm is grams per square meter of fabric. Higher gsm means a thicker, heavier garment that holds its shape. For scale: the Bella+Canvas 3001, a common basic tee, is 142 gsm on Printify; Tapstitch's tees run from 180 gsm (RU0010) to 275 gsm (RT0076), and its hoodies from 300 gsm (RU0018) to 430 gsm (RW0016).

Cut and fit

Boxy and oversized cuts are wider and shorter than a classic tee. That suits streetwear but changes how sizes fit, which matters in step 3. Check the product page for chest width and body length in centimeters, not only the size letter.

Here is what Tapstitch lists, with prices for 1 to 5 pieces as of 2026-10-05:

Example Tapstitch blanks by weight

Compared onWeightBlank price (1-5 pcs)
Pure Cotton Unisex T-Shirt (RU0010)180 gsm$2.99
Essential Cotton T-Shirt (RT0063)260 gsm$5.99
Mineral Wash Boxy Cotton T-Shirt (RT0076)275 gsm$9.99
Classic Unisex Cotton Hoodie (RU0018)300 gsm$10.99
Oversize Fleeced Hoodie (R00286)350 gsm$14.92
Essential Heavyweight Hoodie (RW0016)430 gsm, 56% cotton / 44% poly$22.99

Figures checked against each company's published pages and review-platform listings as of 2026-10-05. “Not published” means the company does not publish that figure.

Printing costs extra on Tapstitch: $2.99 per printed side from its international fulfillment and $3.49 from its US fulfillment. Printful lists base prices that include one front print, such as $11.92 to $19.92 for a Bella + Canvas 3001 tee. Compare total cost per finished piece, not blank prices. Our print-on-demand roundup for clothing compares suppliers side by side.

Step 3: Order samples in every size you sell

Never sell a size you have not held. Print-on-demand blanks come from many factories, and sizing varies. In our review data, sizing is Tapstitch's lowest-scoring theme (4.0 out of 10 across 424 reviews), with buyers saying items run a size or more small, mostly on boxy fits.

“I ordered a t shirt as a sample for an initial production run in size XL. The shirt arrived quite quickly but immediately looked too small.”Brant MORRIS, Trustpilot, January 2026

Tapstitch has no separate sample program, but there is no minimum order, so you can buy one of each size at the normal price. Measure each sample flat (chest, length, sleeve), wash it twice, and measure again. Put your own measurements in your store's size chart. If a blank runs small, tell customers to size up. Our sizing and returns guide covers this for Tapstitch in detail.

Step 4: Create the design and pick a print method

Make print files at high resolution with a transparent background, at the size you want printed, and follow the print guide on the product page. Then pick a method. Tapstitch's help center lists two: DTG (on Brother and Kornit printers) and DTF.

  • DTG (direct to garment) sprays ink into the fabric. It feels soft and handles fine detail and gradients. It works best on cotton.
  • DTF (direct to film) prints onto a film that is heat-pressed on. Colors stay bright on dark garments and it works on more fabrics, but it sits on top of the fabric.

Wash-test your samples. Some Tapstitch reviewers report prints fading or cracking, and its defect window is short (reports are expected within 7 days of delivery), so find out early.

If your brand needs embroidery or all-over print, Tapstitch is a weak fit: reviewers say most items have no embroidery and there is no all-over print. Printful offers DTG, DTF, embroidery, and all-over print.

Step 5: Add brand touches: labels, hang tags, and inserts

Branding is what turns a printed blank into your product. Tapstitch offers:

  • Custom neck labels, 2 x 6 cm or 4 x 4 cm, black or white (international fulfillment only)
  • Hang tags, 13 x 5 cm, 350 gsm card, double-sided
  • Insert cards in the package

Its branded packaging bags are listed as under development, and orders ship with no mention of Tapstitch. Printful charges $0.99 for an inside label and $2.49 for an outside label, with packaging and inserts at custom pricing.

Step 6: Price for margin

The basic math: retail price minus product cost minus shipping equals gross profit. Payment fees, store fees, and ads come out of that, so leave room.

Worked example with Tapstitch's Essential Cotton T-Shirt (RT0063, 260 gsm), shipped from China to the US:

Clothing brand margin example: one 260 gsm tee

Compared onAmount
Retail price (your choice)$35.00
Blank, 1-5 pcs- $5.99
One printed side (international fulfillment)- $2.99
Shipping, CN to US Special Line, first item- $4.96
Left before payment fees, store fees, and ads$21.06

Figures checked against each company's published pages and review-platform listings as of 2026-10-05. “Not published” means the company does not publish that figure.

The blank price drops about 5% at 6 to 29 pieces, 10% at 30 to 99, and 20% at 100 or more (RT0063 goes from $5.99 to $4.80). A back print adds another $2.99. Many brands charge shipping to the customer, which moves the $4.96 out of your margin. See the full breakdown on our Tapstitch pricing page.

Step 7: Connect your store

Most brands sell through Shopify, Etsy, or TikTok Shop. Tapstitch connects to Shopify, TikTok Shop, Etsy, Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, Shoplazza, and BigCommerce, and you can also place orders without linking a store. Once connected, orders flow to the supplier on their own and tracking flows back.

Read the app reviews before you install. Tapstitch rates 4.9 from 124 reviews on the Shopify App Store; Printify has 4.7 from 4,338 and Printful 4.8 from 3,903. More on that in our Shopify App Store reviews summary.

Step 8: Plan fulfillment location and delivery times

Delivery time is production plus transit, and where the order is made decides most of it. Tapstitch quotes 3 to 7 business days of production for small orders. Its transit averages:

  • USA Special Line from Los Angeles: 5 days on average (95% within 7)
  • Special Line from China: 10 days on average (95% within 15)
  • Special Line Pro: 7 days; International Express: 5 days; Standard: 25 days

Only 59 of Tapstitch's 1,244 products can ship from Los Angeles, and several reviewers say orders set to US fulfillment were sent from China instead. Shipping from China does reach the UK ($3.97), Australia ($4.86), and Canada ($6.21) for a 250 g tee. If most of your buyers are in the US and fast delivery is part of your pitch, either build your range from the US-stocked styles or look at Printful, which prints in the US and Europe. Tell customers the real delivery window at checkout.

Is Tapstitch a good fit for a new clothing brand?

For heavyweight streetwear on a tight budget, it is a strong option. Our review data scores it 9.1 out of 10 on value and 8.9 on ease of use, and the blanks and labels get regular praise. The weak spots are sizing (4.0), support (4.4), and shipping (6.3). There is no subscription and no minimum, so a test run costs only the samples.

If you need embroidery, all-over print, or a large US-made catalog, start with Printful. If you want the widest catalog and the lowest prices across many print providers, look at Printify. Starting a clothing brand with no inventory FAQ

Can you really start a clothing brand with no inventory?+

Yes. With print on demand, the supplier prints each piece after a customer orders it, so you pay for the product and shipping only when a sale comes in. Tapstitch, Printful, and Printify all work this way and none of them charge a monthly fee on their free plans.

What gsm should a streetwear t-shirt be?+

A common basic tee, the Bella+Canvas 3001, is 142 gsm (Printify listing). Tapstitch lists tees from 180 gsm (RU0010) to 275 gsm (RT0076) and hoodies up to 430 gsm (RW0016).

Should I use DTG or DTF printing?+

DTG prints ink straight into the fabric and suits detailed or photo designs on cotton. DTF prints onto a film that is heat-pressed on, which handles bold graphics and works on more fabric types. Ask for a sample of your own design in both if your supplier offers both.

How much does it cost to start a print-on-demand clothing brand?+

The platform can be free. Your real starting costs are samples (each one at base price plus shipping), a store plan if you use Shopify or similar, and any marketing. With Tapstitch, a 260 gsm tee is $5.99 plus $2.99 per printed side, before shipping.

Does print-on-demand clothing run small?+

It depends on the blank. Tapstitch reviewers often report sizing a size or more small, especially on boxy fits. Order samples in every size you plan to sell and publish your own measured size chart.

How long does print-on-demand shipping take?+

Production plus transit. Tapstitch quotes 3 to 7 business days of production for small orders. Its USA Special Line averages 5 days in transit from Los Angeles, and its Special Line from China averages 10 days. Only 59 Tapstitch products can ship from Los Angeles.
